"One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages opens every door along the way." - Frank Smith

Throughout their four years at LJS, children will participate in regular French lessons as part of our curriculum. We believe that the teaching of another language fosters pupils' curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world we live in; it also provides a foundation for further language learning at Key Stage 3 and beyond. Through MFL, children are given opportunities to communicate for practical purposes, explore comparisons with their own language and additionally, strengthen their sense of identity.

French topics that build upon children's prior knowledge of the language are taught across each year group. These provide children with opportunities to develop their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills whilst also expanding their cultural awareness and understanding of language learning. Through the use of engaging and active lessons, pupils are taught new vocabulary alongside key conversation skills that they can then apply in a real-life context.

At LJS, we strongly believe that children learn languages most effectively through frequent exposure to them. Consequently, language learning in school is always encouraged, be it in the classroom, during assemblies or even in the playground.
